BBW Expands Bike Education to South Side CPS Schools

Blackstone Bicycle Works (BBW) is bringing bike education to Andrew Carnegie Elementary School and Bret Harte Elementary School—both Chicago Public Schools located on the South Side.

This expansion provides bike safety training, cycling skills, and hands-on learning to even more youth throughout the school year.

In February, BBW Program Managers Alex and Bruce partnered with teachers at Carnegie to deliver a one-hour “Bike Rodeo” session to 255 students in grades K-8. Students learned to navigate an obstacle course on a bicycle, practicing essential traffic safety skills, such as  braking and steering, hand signals, and proper helmet use.

Inspired by their experience, many students signed up for BBW’s after-school program and summer camp—where they will continue to learn bike mechanics and safety while gaining access to mentorship, academic counseling, and scholarship opportunities.

Building on this momentum, BBW will bring the Bike Rodeo to Bret Harte Elementary in April, expanding access to bike knowledge and safety for even more students. In the fall, BBW will return to Carnegie to continue deepening students' cycling education.
