Spring Break Adventure at Blackstone Bicycle Works

This spring break, 14 youths from seven local high schools joined Blackstone Bicycle Works for an educational 1-week Spring Break Camp. From early morning to late afternoon each day, the participants dove into a hands-on mix of bike mechanics, creative bicycle art, STEM activities, and college and career exploration, turning their spring break into a week full of skill-building, growth, and fun.

The camp provided a wide range of engaging activities, starting with practical bike maintenance lessons where participants learned how to replace chains, check tire pressure, and tune brakes.

“I never thought I’d be able to fix my own bike, but now I can change a chain all by myself,” said J'amaya, a participant.

In addition to bike mechanics, the camp featured creative and STEM-focused projects. Campers designed and launched rockets, explored music through beat-making, crafted custom t-shirts and buttons, and created delicious smoothies on a “smoothie bike”.

Guest facilitators from diverse fields—art, engineering, graphic design, music recording, and urban gardening—guided the youth through hands-on projects while inspiring them to explore new career paths and interests. At the end of the week, participants earned a $100 stipend for their active and creative engagement.

A key highlight of the week was a guided tour of the University of Chicago. During the tour, participants explored the campus, met graduate students, and learned about various college pathways.

One student reflected on the experience, saying, “I really enjoyed the tour because it helped me decide that I want to go to the University of Chicago after high school.”

The camp also received positive feedback from parents. One parent wrote, “Thank you for organizing such an amazing program and allowing Mikayla to be a part of it. She has been nothing but enthusiastic about the incredible experience she’s had.”

Another parent shared, “We’re so grateful that my son had the chance to step away from the couch and video games to take part in such a unique Spring Break program, where he could stay active, connect with other kids, and learn something new.”
